Health & Safety of Workers | ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 is proposed as a standard applicable in all organizations, without distinctions related to the place, size or type of activity. Born to replace BS OHSAS 18001, it is based on the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) modeland also refers, in the same time, to the regulations in force in the individual countries, as well as the provisions of the International Workers' Organization ILO-OSH, harmonizing them and expanding their scope of action.

Ultimately, it is built according to the same structure (HLS) as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, which will make it easier to integrate health and safety management system with quality and environmental management system.

The ISO 45001 standard focuses on the identification of all those internal and external aspects that can influence the individual organization in the management of health and safety at work.

The main points are as follows:

  • More attention and controls on all organizations having connections with the organization: equipment, contractors, manufactures, etc.
  • Promotion of internal and external communication related to health and safety issue
  • The need to better take into account the reports, needs and aspirations of workers throughout the production chain
  • The need to urge leadership to pay more attention to health and safety, avoiding delegating them, but integrating them with other management aspects
  • Risk analysis as a fundamental and fundamental point in business management
  • Some corrections to BS OHSAS 18001 in emergency management.

Lack of safety in the workplace - the consequences

At the economic level, the lack of security in the workplace can be trasformed into early retirement, increased insurance over, absense of staff and other additional costs for the individual company and the entire state.

Each year, around 2.3 milion people worldwide die as a result of accidents or injuries at work, which translates into more the 6.300 people a day.

In order to help organizations fighting workplace accidents and promoting a culture based on safety and health, ISO has released ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management system.

Through certification by an indipendent third-party body, the company provides credibility of its commitments to its customers and stakeholders.
